Making the Switch to Digital Radiography

Digital radiography has come a long way in a very short period of time and holds many benefits for the practicing dentist.

Benefits of Digital Radiography:

• The speed of the acquisition: Once the sensor is exposed, the image is produced within seconds.

• Time saving: Saves time from going to the processor, opening the film packs, waiting for the chemical processing, then labeling and mounting the films.

• Error seen immediately: The operator does not need to remove the sensor in order to see the image. For example, if the doctor takes an x-ray and inadvertently misses the apex, he or she will see the error within seconds. The tube or sensor can be re-arranged as needed and another image be taken immediately.

• Hard to see structures can be captured for proper diagnosis: With a film pack or phosphor storage system, the film or plate must leave the mouth and be processed. The operator will not see the image for several minutes. If there is an error, the operator will need to re-position the tube and film with no reference to the previous orientation.

• Being environmental friendly: You don’t have to continually order conventional film and developer chemicals ever again, nor will you have to fish out a reluctant periapical film from the fixer bath after it’s been mangled by a malfunctioning automatic processor gear.

• The radiographs can be digitally incorporated into the patient’s chart: If you are networked with your front desk, this can be done!

• No more mailing copies: Many insurance companies are accepting digital images via claim-forms over the internet, so no more mailing copies to them. Even if a hard copy is necessary, as in the case of a referral to a specialist, the image can be printed out on high gloss inkjet paper, and the results are simply beautiful!

• Less radiation for patients: From a safety point of view, the digital image represents a savings of up to 90% less radiation!

• More treatment plans accepted: Any patient with any major problems, such as bone loss or periodontal disease, would almost accept treatment plans immediately after seeing the image of their x-rays on a 21-inch monitor, especially if it’s in colors.

• Easy to use: Staff can be trained in a matter of a few hours or so.

Digital x-ray is a win-win situation for everyone, from the dentist, hygienist, and assistant, to even the patient on the other side of the picture. Contact us to see which system is appropriate for your office. Make the switch today!
